Our mother earth is covered by 71% of water. We all learned this at a very early age, but have you ever wondered what all could be beneath these deep blue seas, lakes, and oceans? These waterbodies have hidden so many stories that are waiting to be heard by the world. Interestingly, our deep-sea divers and underwater archeologists have made some incredible discoveries and with each discovery comes an interesting story. These stories could be of a person who lost his/her life while drowning or it could be about the whole kingdom which submerged into water due to flood. These discoveries will certainly amaze you, maybe after reading about some, you might think twice before getting into the water.

Active Bomb In Lake

Back in 1988, an active bomb from the time of World War II was found at the bottom of Lake Washington, Seattle. Most of the people believe that the pilot must have dropped them while flying over the lake. However, no one knows how these bombs arrived at the bottom of the lake.

Lost City

What if you were given a period of time where you were supposed to leave your home after certain years but that period is cut short without any notice? Something similar happened in the town of Bluffton. The people of the town knew they had to evacuate the place but due to Texas’ heavy rains, the whole town was submerged in the water before anyone could escape.

The Lost Plane

In 2013, the Charlotte Fire Department got surprised when they were testing the new sonar equipment. They found a fully intact single-engine plane submerged in water. When they looked for the owner they came to know about a lady called Barbara Anderson who lost this seaplane and had spent a thousand dollars in search of this plane.

Lake Of Skeletons

In Uttrakhand, India is Roopkund lake which is also known as the skeleton lake. Over 200 skeletons were found by the British forest guards in 1942. Earlier it was believed that the skeletons were the remains of the Japanese soldiers who had died while crossing the Himalayas. But later on, the scientist found that they were the locals of the area who belonged to 850AD. The scientist said that these people might have died when ice balls hit them hard on the skull.

Doll Creeping Out

We have a general perspective that dolls should be cute and adorable just like barbie. But a doll was discovered by siblings who were diving for clams. This doll resembled a ghost when it should be resembling a barbie.”My brother and I found this at the bottom of a lake”, claimed the Reddit user. One user anonymously commented, “put this doll back, it looks pure evil”, and if you would look at the picture you might agree with the user.

Want To Sit?

A random chair was found at the bottom of the Pavillion Lake. Reddit user exclaimed ” I’m exploring the bottom of Pavillion Lake for NASA, logging what is found… at 35 meters deep I run into this…”. But the question is, how did this chair come to be at the bottom of the lake? 

Underwater Stoneage

In our history classes, we have all read about the stone age and how we evolved from it. But soon the kids will study the underwater stone age. A team of archeologists from Northwestern Michigan discovered objects that resembled the Stonehenge of England. They even saw a carving that was said to be of mastodon which was a giant elephant.

Longest Shipwreck

In the year 1849, a ship called James McBride was launched to deliver goods from the Atlantic Ocean to Great Lakes. Eight years later in 1857, it was returning from Chicago after delivering the order of woods from Manitou, when it got caught up in the rough wind. The ship sank and now it rests near the Sleeping Bear Point.

Geological Formation

“Ocean X” a team of divers from Sweden, was diving at the center of the Gulf of Bothnia in the northern Baltic Sea when they discovered a strange object. Initially many theories were introduced about what this object could be. Some believed it to be a UFO plane that sank in water but the scientists cleared all the doubts and told that it was just natural geological formation.

Ghost Grandpa

In 1927, SS Kamloops sank without any trace and no one could understand as to where the ship vanished along with its 22 crew members. In 1977, it was finally discovered in the Isle Royale in Lake Superior. It is believed that the Old Whitey follows divers throughout the engine room, which is an experience that some divers have also felt.

The Practice Ship

Douglas SBC Dive Bomber was a dual purpose plane. It was utilized as the scouting plane as well as a dive bomber. It was given to new pilots for practice. It must have sunk while a pilot was practicing. After 65 years, the plane was found but there were no human remains.

Rock

If you ever find a piece of rock in the lake, there are a lot of chances you would just throw the piece of rock back thinking it to be just a random rock. But actually, it is Pharyngeal teeth, which was found by a kid. This piece is composed of the hard movable plates. A lot of fishes use pharyngeal teeth to crush the external skeleton (which is also called exoskeleton) of their prey.

Skeletal Remains

It is said that the Lake Labynkyr consists of the skeletal remains and jaws which possibly belong to “DEVIL”. In 2013 drivers reached the bottom of the lake in the first attempt and found the skeletal remains and jaws. There are no proven facts but only a brief by Professor Emeliyanova, who said: “It was our fourth or fifth day at the lake when our echo sounding device registered a huge object in the water under our boat.”

Norwegian Ferry Hydro

During the Second World War, one of the most confidential missions was the sinking of Norwegian ferry Hydro. This ferry was supposed to carry the ingredients to the Nazi’s secret atomic bomb project headquarters. But Allied forces had some other plans, they were able to get onboard and succeeded in their mission to submerge the ferry.

Underwater Cross

In 1956 a couple lost their 15-year-old son in a shotgun at the farm. In his memory, the grieving parents commissioned an 11-foot marble crucifix from an Italian sculptor. The crucifix was damaged in the transit, so the parents refused to take it and it was sold to a diving club. The members of the club lowered the crucifix in memory of the people who lost their lives while diving.

Alien Plant

This alien plant is water lily rhizome which is most likely to be found in lakes. A Reddit user found this long alien-looking creature in the lake and posted with the caption “What the heck is this alien-looking thing I found in my lake. About a foot to a foot and a half and has a weird shell and lots of legs looking things on one side?”

What Is This?

It is really difficult to understand whether this object is a fishing net weight or a Cannonball. A Reddit user is making people pick a side on his post which says, “[It] was found on the shore of the Mozhaisk water reservoir (man-made lake flooded in the 1960s) which may or may not be relevant. Also 15 km northwest of the site of the battle of Borodino.”

Missing Teens

While testing the new sonar equipment in Lake Floss in Elk City, a team of Highway Patrol stumbled upon 2 cars which were in the lake for a long time. When they looked inside, they found 3 skeletons in each car. A DNA test was conducted which confirmed that the skeleton’s description matches 6 teens who went missing in the years 1969 and 1970 respectively.

Prosthetic Leg

When Elliot Fuller and Jason Franklin went for diving they discovered a prosthetic leg. An ad was put in Craigslist by Mark Warner who offered the reward of $50 to the person who will return it. Well, Fuller and Franklin received the reward on the return of the leg and they went for breakfast with their families.

Tom Sublett

Tom Sublett, the commissioner of Gleen County, Georgia was found dead at the bottom of the lake in 2012. His autopsy report stated that he had died by drowning. According to the report his hands were tied in front with zip chains and he also had a gunshot mark on his forehead, wherein the police claimed that it was a case of suicide. However, no gun was ever found in his car, and there was no note of suicide either.

Underwater City

In 2009 a Pavlopetri Underwater Archeology Project was launched. During the research, researchers discovered roads, courtyards and tomb and foundation of buildings. The scientists are still trying to figure out what could be the reason behind the sinking of this city.

Yobaguni Monument

A diver stumbled upon the strange ruins. Later he realized that it was Yonaguni Monument which is also known as Japan’s ‘Lost Atlantis’. It has been a topic of debate for decades, as Masaaki Kimura who was a professor at the University of Ryukyus claimed that it was man-made as per Ancient Codes. Well, some agree with him but some disagree, they believe that it is a natural formation.

Ancient Computer

In 1901 a strange piece of technology was discovered. While researching the piece, scientists discovered that it was used to track the placement of the Sun, Moon, and Planets. This was basically, an ancient computer.

Underwater Graveyard

The above image is of the haunting Chuck Lagoon. The lagoon was the main base camp for the Japanese during World War II. It was destructed by the U.S forces in 1944, causing the sinking of more than 60 warships and 250 planes. Surprisingly, the ships have been well preserved.

River In The Ocean

If you dive far in the Yucatan Peninsula, between the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf you can find a mysterious river that flows beneath. This river-like density of the water was made possible by the heavy concentration of the saltwater which is at the bottom of the river. This concentration separated freshwater from the saltwater.

Bimini Road

While diving in the Bahamas, you can see the Bimini Road just 6 meters below. With the discovery of this road, many theories came to life such as some believe it to be created by “Ancient Egyptian divine protectors,” and they even say that this path leads to the mythical city of Atlantis. While some believe they are formed by the natural process. These theories are the reason for its popularity.

Heracleion

Another ancient city which has submerged into deep waters is HERACLEION. Everyone thought it was a mythical city until it was discovered. This city was known by a different name in Egypt and by another name in Greek. It was one of the prosperous cities of the 17th and 18th centuries. The reason behind its sinking is believed to be natural disasters.

Lion City

Before the 1950s there was a city situated in the valley near Wu Shi Mountain which is known as Five Lion Mountain in English. During that time, Zhejiang was the center of economics and politics. But in 1950 the Chinese government decided to flood the city to build a dam.

Apollo Mission Remains

Engines of the Spacecraft of Apollo 11 Mission which made it possible for Neil Armstrong to be the first man to land on the moon were found deep inside an ocean, about 14000 feet below the surface. No wonder, the plane had its remains in the sky as well as underwater.

Lost Mahabalipuram Pagoda

The tsunami of 2005 made one of the lost Mahabalipuram Padoga visible at the coast of Bay of Bengal. This is believed to be one of the seven temples. 6 are still submerged in the water.

Two Mysterious Trains

At the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, two trains rest perfectly. In 1985 Paul Hepler found these trains with the help of a magnetometer. The mystery about these trains is that no one knows how these two trains landed at the bottom of the ocean and where did they come from as no missing report is found in the records.

Between Two Continent

If you wish to be between two places at the same time then Silfra Crack is the best place for you. The Silfra Crack is right where the plates of the North American and Euroasian Continents meet. The plates are continuously getting separated by 2cm per year.

Titanic

While talking about the underwater discoveries how can we forget about the famous UNSINKABLE, TITANIC? In 1912, it took its first trip and was hit by the iceberg. It was found at the ocean bed in 1985.

Grip Island

The Grip island as it is known now. It was earlier known as the Arginusae islands, many people believe that the Battle of Arginusae which was between Spartans and Athenians was fought on this ground in 406BC. In 2015, this island was located by a team of archeologists. Grip island is just a few yards off the coast of Turkey.

1500 -Year-Old Sword

Last year an eight-year-old Saga Vanecek was having another regular day until she pulled out a sword. Initially, the family did not give much importance to it as it was just another ordinary sword. But later on, they came to know that it was no ordinary sword, it was a 1500-year-old sword which their 8-year-old daughter had pulled out. Now Saga is also called as “Queen of Sweden”.

Ancient Fortress

A team of divers made a remarkable discovery in Turkey’s Van Lake. They discovered a fortress under the lake which was about 3000 years old. It is said that it was built in the Iron Age. This site is almost a kilometer long and the walls are 10-13 feet high. It sank due to the rising levels of the lake.

Lost City Of India

According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that there was a city called Dwarka. Marine biologists have found the remains of this city in the Gulf of Cambay off the western coast of India. It is said that this city was the busiest trade center of western coast of ancient India. Now Dwarka has become the most well studied underwater site.

Underwater Sphinx

What if you go underwater dive for the study of the shipwreck but you discover a Sphinx? In 2014, Jack Nelson went for the study of the shipwreck but he stumbled upon a weird looking statue that resembled the Great Egyptian Sphinx. After the chemical test, the monument showed that it was most likely taken from a quarry near Wadi Rahanu which is an Ancient Egyptian Region and is in water for more almost 2500 years.

Olive Oil

A 7500-year-old well was discovered off the coast in Haifa, Israel. The remains appear to be of the Neolithic Village. The remains of the village are helping in the understanding of how the pre-historic societies worked. At the site, they discovered many olive oil production plants which are assumed to be the oldest olive oil production centers.

Cleopatra’s Lost Kingdom

In 1988, a team of archeologists, led by Frenchman Franck started to dig the ancient city. The city had submerged into the water after several earthquakes. The artifacts found in the water were however intact. Among the discovered artifacts there was a statue of Cleopatra’s royal living quarters.

Circle Of Mystery

Yoji Ookata is a Japanese photographer and scuba diver. While diving 80 feet below the sea level. He discovered a mysterious circle that was formed by the pufferfish in the sea as a mating ritual.

Loki’s Castle

Underwater, there are 5 active hydrothermal vents which are located between Greenland and Norway. It has been home to more than 20 new animal species. After the discovery was made, the Norwegian government is planning to build a national park. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope that the home of these new species remain untouched.

Underwater Pyramid

Imagine while sailing as an amateur yachtsman you discover a whole pyramid underwater? Diocleiano Silvaan amateur yachtsman discovered the underwater pyramid. While sailing his sonar machine picked several very large objects between the islands of São Miguel and Terceira in the Azores in Portugal. The results of the first examination showed that the pyramid stands 180 feet tall. However, the question that arises is that are these pyramids made by man or by natural phenomenon.

Christ Of The Abyss

Christ of the Abyss is an underwater statue of Jesus Christ. An Italian Sculptor created a statue of Jesus Christ looking towards the sky. However, this statue sank near Portofino in the Italian Riviera.

Port Royal

Back in 1509, a city was founded called Port Royal. It was also known as “Wickedest City on Earth”. This was because of the uncontrolled consumption of rum and other alcohol and other illegal activities. In the year 1692, the city sank after a disastrous earthquake. 13 acres from the city sunk 50 feet into Kingston Harbor, where it remains today.

Antikythera Shipwreck

In the year 1900, a shipwreck was discovered by a small group of divers. Many valuable artifacts were discovered such as jewelry, bronze statues, glassware and more. What a treasure!

Zhemchug Canyon

Zhemchug Canyon is the largest and deepest submarine. The drainage area of this submarine is 11,350 km2 with a volume of 5800 km3. It is home to many marine species.
